New, hour-long sessions are brought to you monthly by the Caltech Industrial Relations Center:

  • Webinars are available at no charge
  • Pass along information about our webinars to your colleagues so they can participate

Our goal is to introduce and examine critical business issues to help you broaden your information base and provide new insights and perspectives in developing new technologies and innovative products.

Join us on May 14, 2008, for the Caltech IRC webinar hosted by Mr. Fred Farina, Assistant Vice President for Technology Transfer at Caltech. The topic is “Successful Technology Transfer: The Caltech Approach.”

University technology transfer is a growing source of commercial technology opportunity in an ever-expanding global, open innovation environment that is vital to providing technology for new products and services.

Caltech ranks among the top three universities in the number of patents obtained, having over 110 patents issued in each of the last five years. The function of the Technology Transfer Office is to grant rights to Caltech patents and other intellectual property (IP) to the for-profit sector for commercialization. This process has created numerous industrial collaborations resulting in substantial and successful new products.

The main focus of the Caltech Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) is on the creation of new start-ups based on Caltech IP. In many cases, these new ventures involve Caltech students and faculty, but also post-doctoral fellows and other researchers. Since 1995, Caltech has been instrumental in the creation of nearly 100 new companies, about 10 per year, of which 15 have been acquired or gone public.

In this webinar, Fred Farina will describe:

  • The Caltech model of bringing technologies invented in the lab to the market place
  • How the university technology transfer process can be an important factor in industrial acquisition of external technology

Invite your colleagues and join us Wednesday, May 14, at 10 am PDT, to learn how you can use university technology transfer sources to acquire external technology. Please register in advance to receive the toll-free call-in number and presentation link.

Audio files will be available after the presentation for emailing to others in your organization to continue the learning.
